Solid Waste
WHY IT MATTERS
Municipal choices with respect to solid waste management are growing as new technologies are created that allow us to recapture more and more value from what we used to treat as pure "waste." The market prices for some types of "waste," such as metals, are going up as global scarcities become a reality. Waste-to-energy technologies are also evolving to become more environmentally acceptable. Green Community Technologies® takes a systems approach to solid waste, beginning with opportunities for waste reduction at the source, and then considering alternative approaches to collection, recycling, reuse, marketing, and disposal by type of waste stream.
Solutions That Work!
Municipal solid waste management, New Gloucester, Maine
Using the Green Community Technologies® approach, Yellow Wood worked with the Town of New Gloucester, Maine to examine a number of options in the areas of waste reduction, waste collection, and recycling, including municipal composting, Pay As You Throw, having a transfer station vs. instituting curbside collection, and single stream recycling vs. source separating recycling. Our analysis recognized the important social function of the town’s solid waste transfer station for town residents.
